E-bike Writer Portfolio

Welcome to my e-bike writer portfolio. I have been writing about e-bikes for about a decade, and only now do I feel it is time to build a dedicated e-bike writer portfolio for the vertical in which I produce journalism, product landing pages, and content.

Background to My E-bike Writing

Until around 2016, I wrote extensively about EVs; you can see the portfolio here. My father had an e-bike, and I connected first with E-bikes Direct and then with the Electric Bike Report. At E-bikes Direct I produced product landing page copy and blogs, and at the Electric Bike Report I did e-bike journalism about various issues (with a US bent). In 2022, ebikes.org asked me to help with landing pages and website content, and I worked with them for about 18 months.

My Own E-bikes

In 2018, I took the plunge and bought a used Haibike FatSix with 3” tyres. On rough ground, it was like riding a Saracen light tank into battle with its powerful Bosch motor and smooth ride! Sadly, Haibike have discontinued its FatSix range — I am particularly saddened as I used to ride it over all sorts of terrain, including muddy fields where the tyres just floated over the muck. I would love to modify a dual-suspension one with a pannier rack and mudguards.

In 2021, I parted ways with that old steed and replaced it with a Giant Talon E+ EX trekking bike. Honestly, I bought it because I couldn’t afford a Haibike equivalent, which would have been £1,000 more. It originally had coil-sprung suspension and a Yamaha motor with 50Nm of torque — no hill has defeated me yet, even with relatively little kick!

In recent months, I discovered that I had ridden it no more than 500 miles in the first few years of ownership. Since May 2026, I have taken e-bike riding seriously and have ridden more than 1,400 miles to date.

I’m not your straight ‘roadie’ or MTB rider. I prefer to ride my e-trekking bike out of town and onto byways around the South Dorset Ridgeway. A typical fun ride might be 15 miles of road and 15 miles of cross-country. Secured in a way that’s more convenient than using my car, I use it for daily fun rides and to do much of my shopping via car-free routes in and around Weymouth.

As such, my main mods include aggressive mud tyres and an SR Suntour air-suspension fork.  Yes, rolling resistance is higher on the road, but I trade that for grip and comfort when flogging over Dorset’s fields and byways in Southern England.

If I have a spare £7,000, I will likely make that Giant my shopping bike and get a dual-suspension Riese & Müller that I’ll modify for the mixed riding that I do. The 5th Gen Bosch Performance CX motor has little to no resistance when pedalling over the cut-out speed, and Riese & Müller is, in my eyes, the Bugatti of e-bikes!

My E-bike Writer Portfolio

After a three-year gap working as a research analyst (including covering e-cargo-bike delivery), I’ve returned to e-bike journalism. Below are samples of my e-bike content writing, e-bike journalism, and e-bike product landing page writing. If you like what you see, drop me a line at freelance@richardshrubb.com

In 2026, I have developed a relationship with Cycling Weekly.
